GROUND PANGOLIN

The Ground Pangolin is one of four species of pangolin found in Africa. They have a body length between 50 and 60 cms (20 - 23.5 inches), a tail length between 40 and 50 cms (16 - 20 inches) and they weigh between 15 and 18 Kgs (33 - 40 lbs). The weight of their scales makes up approximately 20% of their total weight. The Ground Pangolin is covered in extremely hard, brown coloured scales. It rolls up into a ball to protect itself when it is threatened and it can also use the scales on its long, broad tail as a form of defence, to slash at attackers. They also have anal scent glands that emit a foul, strong smelling fluid. Their tongue is extremely long, and it can reach lengths of up to 40 cms (16 inches). In a resting position the tongue is pulled back and stored in a pouch in its chest cavity. To enable them to catch termites and ants their salivary glands produce a sticky mucus which coats their tongue.

AFRICA GREY PARROTS

Described as a perfect combination of brains and beauty, the African Grey is one of the more popular parrots kept by the aviculturist. Psittacus erithacus erithacus, the Congo African Grey, is the most common, while P. e. princeps is the least. Their pale head and grey body is strikingly offset by their brilliant red tail feathers. Typically, the African Grey is shy and reserved. With early and prudent handling, they will become trusting and affectionate, although not as demonstrative, per se, as some of the other small to medium parrots. African Greys are probably best known for their amazing ability to mimic not only the human voice but also an impressive array of environmental sounds. A Who's Who of African Greys includes Prudle and Alex. Famous for mimicry or intellect, Prudle holds the Guinness Book of World Records for the biggest vocabulary, at 800 words, while Alex, incredibly, exhibited what can only be called cognitive abilities - he could talk, count, and € read a little. With plenty of early stimulation, most African Greys will start speaking after one year of age. Even if your African Grey only maintains a handful of words in her vocabulary, it is certain you will share an entertaining and interactive life with one of these very special members of the parrot family. Average cost of an African Grey is $1,000 - $2,000.

UMBRELLA COCKATOOS PARROTS

The umbrella cockatoo is one of the popular big species of cockatoo. Breeding success in captivity is pretty good, making it a common species to find in pet shops or with pet owners. Because of this the prices vary a lot. An umbrella cockatoo will go for anything between $1500 and $3000 USD. Umbrella Cockatoos are medium-sized cockatoos that weigh between 17 oz (480 g) up to 25 oz (700 g) - the average being 20 oz (565 g). They average 18 inches or 46 cm in length. Their wings measure between 9.84 - 12.2 inches or 25 to 31 cm. (Arndt and Pittman, 2003; Juniper and Parr, 1998). Umbrella Cockatoos are large white parrots with brown / reddish or black eyes, dark grey beaks and legs. The umbrella cockatoo, also known as the white cockatoo or the great white-crested cockatoo, is well-known in bird circles as being one of the most affectionate and affable companion birds widely available on the market today. An Indonesian native, the umbrella is slightly smaller than the Moluccan cockatoo, but is not smaller in personality or charm. This out-going cockatoo is infamous for its outlandish antics and for being clingy with its owners. The umbrella can be distinguished from other white cockatoos by its wholly white crest that raises like an umbrella when the bird is excited, agitated, or ready to play (or bite!). Both the beak and legs are a dark gray, and the feathers on the undersides of the wings and tail are light yellow.

MOLUCCAN COCKATOOS PARROTS

The Moluccan cockatoo is a favorite among bird fanciers due to its striking appearance and wonderful temperament. Moluccans are also called salmon-crested cockatoos because of the salmon-pink feathers that comprise most of their head crest, which they will display when they are excited, angry, afraid, or thrilled with something. The Moluccan is a large bird, one of the largest white cockatoo species, but can range in size, reportedly because the region in which they are found in the wild is large enough to support sub species. The Moluccan cockatoo is a rosy-pink color, with the depth of the pinkness varying per individual. The feet and beak are black, but are generally covered with powder down, which make them look gray — don’t worry, this is absolutely healthy. he Moluccan cockatoo is also a common and popular cockatoo species in the United States. In nature it is rare, but in captivity the breeding efforts are successful.

PALM COCKATOOS PARROTS

The black cockatoo is the largest of the cockatoo species, popular as pets all across the world despite the expensive cost that go into acquiring one. The palm cockatoo is a native to North Queensland in Australia and the island of New Guinea in the pacific. Regal, elegant, gentle souls, sweet of nature, docile, characteristics fit the wonderful Palm Cockatoo. You have not lived until you have seen and had the opportunity to interact with one of these creatures. These Cockatoos, also referred to as the Black Palms, have very large beaks. Somewhat unlike any other parrot, the upper and lower bill do not meet. This is so that the tongue can hold a nut against the top beak while the bottom beak opens it. Usually one of the best talkers in the Cockatoo group, their call is so unusual that it must be heard to describe. The call is not, however, unpleasant. And they are usually thought to be a quieter cockatoo. They should be fed as the breeder recommends and that usually includes a pelleted diet with Pandanus and Kamani nuts. In addition, dark green, dark orange vegetables should be in their diet. Grains, pastas, and thought to variety is usually recommended. This is a large investment for ownership. Do not skimp on this bird when it comes to cage, feeding, and proper toys and supplies. If you cannot afford what is necessary for this creature, you cannot afford the bird.

ECLECTUS PARROTS

Eclectus parrots come in a variety of sub-species, including the Grand Eclectus, the Vosmaeri, and the Solomon Island Eclectus (Eclectus roratus solomonensis) which is the most commonly found Eclectus in captivity. Originating in the Solomon Islands, this bird is prized for its stunning appearance and great pet quality. A little harder to find than some of the other parrots of this size, the Solomon is easily recognizable once you do find one — you can’t miss an Eclectus! Their feathers do not have a distinct outline like the feathers of other birds; Eclectus parrots look as if they are covered with a fine fur, and along with their day-glow colors, the effect is astounding. Eclectus are dimorphic, meaning that there are visual distinctions between the sexes. Males are a bright green and have a horn-colored beak, with a splash of bright blue on the wing and a bright red underwing. The females are a stunning red with a deep violet belly and a black beak. In fact, because of these differences, these birds were not bred successfully for many years because breeders were putting males with males and hens with hens! It wasn’t until a couple of decades ago that someone realized that the green birds were male and the red birds were female. DESCRIPTION: Size : 14in - 20in; Fledging : 11 weeks; Cluych : mostly 2 baby Eclectus; Weight : 400 - 452grams; Incubation period : 28 - 30 days;
